SUMS: Tran -- The Base 12 Counting System: A Superior Alternative to the Decimal System

This week’s SUMS talk is by undergrad student Andy Tran. Pizza and drinks available
afterwards!

Abstract:
In our modern society, we take the base 10 counting system for granted, but
why did it have to be this way? Since 12 is a superior highly composite number, it would
make a base 12 counting system extremely practical for everyday calculations and
arithmetic. In this talk, we will look at the different bases used in historical and
current societies, and then investigate the benefits of a base 12 counting system.
