Program Guide: What will I learn in Junior units?

Each semester-length Junior (that is, First Year) unit will introduce you to mathematical techniques that are fundamental to further study in many areas of science and engineering as well as in mathematics and statistics.

Each Advanced, Mainstream or Fundamental unit is worth 3 credit points and involves two lectures and one tutorial per week. The 6 credit point unit MATH1111 involves three lectures and two tutorials per week.

Differential Calculus MATH1001 (Mainstream) or MATH1901 (Advanced): Continues and extends the calculus you learned at school.

Linear Algebra MATH1002 (Mainstream) or MATH1902 (Advanced): An introduction to systems of equations and related geometrical transformations.

Integral Calculus and Mathematical Modelling MATH1003 (Mainstream) or MATH1903 (Advanced): You will learn about processes and techiques for the application of mathematical tools to the solution of practical problems.

Discrete Mathematics MATH1004 (Mainstream): The mathematics of counting. Here you will learn about systematic counting techniques and the mathematical and computer logic which underlies the application of these techniques.

Statistics MATH1005 (Mainstream) or MATH1905 (Advanced): An introduction to computer analysis of data and the construction of probabilistic models and their uses in hypothesis testing (which is the theoretical basis for all experimental sciences).

Fundamental units

The Fundamental units of study are designed to provide you with an overview of the necessary mathematical and statistical background for the most common applications of mathematics that science students will encounter. These units are principally designed for students in the Faculty of Science whose major interest lies outside mathematics. In general, Fundamental units do not allow you to continue studying mathematics in the Intermediate year. Thus students intending to major in Physics, for example, should generally not choose the Fundamental Mathematics stream, because they will need some Intermediate Mathematics units.

Applications of Calculus MATH1011:Studies the modelling of data with mathematical functions of several kinds, and the use of calculus in optimization problems.

Biostatistics MATH1015: An introduction to computer analysis of data and the construction of probabilistic models and their uses in hypothesis testing (which is the theoretical basis for all experimental sciences).

Mathematical Modelling MATH1013:You will learn more about the uses of mathematics in the modelling of physical and scientific processes, and methods for solving the equations that arise.

Introduction to Linear Algebra MATH1014:Introduces you to vectors and systems of linear equations, emphasizing applications in life sciences and technological sciences.
