Some fluid flows in porous media: theories, experiments and applications

Herbert E. Huppert
ITG, DAMTP, Univeristy of Cambridge and UNSW
Mon 24th Oct 2016, 2-3pm, Carslaw Lecture Theater 275

The seminar will discuss a variety of fluid flows in porous media, relevant to situations in carbon dioxide sequestration; groundwater flows; vapour motions in volcanic conduits; the extraction of oil; … . Different situations will be outlined which require the solution of nonlinear governing equations, sometimes using similarity methods and sometimes numerical analysis (at least in part). Many of the results will be compared with experiments in the laboratory and observations in the field. A simple desk-top experiment will be performed to suggest the way of treating one of the situations to be examined.
