Localization in characteristic p: an introduction

Friday 30th July, 12:05-12:55pm, Carslaw 175.

One of the key results in characteristic 0 representation theory is the Beilinson-Bernstein Localization Theorem. This relates certain modules for a semisimple Lie algebra to D-modules on the corresponding flag variety, thus allowing the multiplicities of simples in Verma modules to be expressed in terms of intersection cohomology. Recently a generalization to the characteristic p case was found by Bezrukavnikov, Mirkovic, and Rumynin. In this talk I will attempt to introduce some of their ideas and explain the consequences for representation theory.
