A survey of Toric varieties from a topological viewpoint

Friday 6th, June 12:05-12:55pm, Stephen Roberts.

Various constructions of MacPherson, Davis and Januszkiewicz and others, provide an important topological window into the theory of toric varieties, manifolds and subspace configurations. Topology provides a rich source of invariants in terms of the underlying combinatorics of fans and polytopes. I will give a brief overview of the theory and its applications, drawing parallels between the geometry and topology where possible. I hope also to discuss approaches to the study of certain singular varieties, via spaces investigated first by Buchstaber, Panov and Cox.
