SMRI ’What is ...?’ Seminar:
’What is ...a stable homotopy refinement of U_q(gl_m)?’
Anne Dranowski (University of Southern California)

Thursday 17th August 1:00-2:00pm (AEST)
Carslaw 375

Abstract: Thanks to skew Howe duality of gl_m and gl_n, the category of modules for the
quantum group U_q(gl_n) can be described diagrammatically. 2-categorifying the
diagrammatics produces an oriented and ’m-sheeted’ cobordism category that’s
equivalent to the tangle cobordism category studied in Chen-Khovanov (2014) when n = 2.
Lawson, Lipshitz and Sarkar (2019) define spectral bimodules for this latter category by
mapping it to the Burnside 2-category of set-valued matrices. Piecing together we
imagine a map from 2-categorified U_q(gl_m) to Burnside and a resulting map from
U_q(gl_m) to the category of spectra.
